    DIALux Simulations: Why and When

DIALux is the industry-standard tool for verifying lux, UGR, uniformity and energy density. Skipping it is the source of most site surprises.

    DIALux Simulations: Why and When

    What DIALux Does

DIALux simulates lighting designs using manufacturer IES files in a 3D model of the space. It outputs lux, UGR, uniformity, energy density and false-colour diagrams.

    Why It Matters

Without simulation, lighting design is a guess. With it, every fixture choice is validated against the brief before specification freeze.

    What a DIALux Report Contains

    • Average and minimum lux on each working plane
    • Uniformity (U0)
    • UGR from observer positions
    • Energy density (W/m²)
    • False-colour rendering of light distribution
    • Fixture schedule with photometric data

    When to Run It

    • Every commercial project
    • Hospitality public areas (lobby, dining, lounge)
    • Residential projects with critical task or accent zones
    • Any facade with quantified brightness requirements

    Common Mistakes

    • Running DIALux on a generic IES file, not the actual specified fixture
    • Skipping observer positions for UGR
    • Treating the simulation as final, not iterating

    Professional Recommendation

Treat DIALux as part of the design process, not a deliverable. Iterate two or three times before specification freeze.

    Lighting Intelligence by Alya

At Ashwamedha Design Solutions, this is part of our Lighting Intelligence practice, every recommendation is validated through DIALux simulation, lux calculations and visual comfort analysis before it reaches a construction site. Alya, our lighting intelligence platform, packages this thinking into reusable design tools.

    Frequently Asked Questions

    Is DIALux free?+

Yes, DIALux evo is free. Licensed alternatives like Relux exist; the principles are the same.

    Can I run DIALux myself?+

Yes, but learning to interpret results correctly takes time. Most projects benefit from a trained consultant.
