Hotel Lobby Lighting Design
Designing a hotel lobby, vertical light, reception clarity, lounge intimacy and the day/evening/late-night scene programme.

The First Three Seconds
A guest reads a lobby in seconds. The lighting is doing more work than the architecture in that moment, it sets warmth, scale and brand long before the eye registers material.
Lux Strategy
| Zone | Lux |
|---|---|
| Ambient | 100–200 lux |
| Reception desk | 300 lux at task surface |
| Lounge | 50–150 lux with accents |
| Art / feature walls | 200–400 lux vertical |
Vertical Illuminance Matters More Than Horizontal
In a lobby, guests are standing and looking around. Light on walls, art and faces is what they perceive, not light on the floor. Design vertical illuminance deliberately.
Scene Programme
- Day, daylight integrated, ambient up, accents subtle
- Evening, ambient down, accents and decorative up
- Late night, minimum ambient, strong feature lighting
- Cleaning, full output, no decorative
CCT & CRI
2700K–3000K, CRI 90+. Skin tones at reception are a brand-critical surface.
Common Mistakes
- Even horizontal lux but dark walls
- Cool reception lighting, faces look tired
- No scene control
- Reception desk task light forgotten
A lobby designed in plan looks even. A lobby designed in elevation feels warm.
