    Pooja Room Lighting Design Guide

    Introduction

A pooja room is a focal space within an Indian home. Lighting it well is a matter of reverence, focus and calm, not brightness.

    Why It Matters

Religious and ritual spaces depend on focal hierarchy. Light that misses the deity, or floods the entire room, breaks the atmosphere intended by the architecture.

    Recommended Approach

    SurfaceRecommended
Deity (focal accent)300 lux, narrow beam
    Ambient150–200 lux
    Floor / circulation100–150 lux
    CCT2700K, sometimes 3000K
    CRI90+ with R9 > 50

    Layers

    • Narrow accent on the murti or photograph
    • Soft warm ambient from cove or recessed wall washers
    • Decorative diya, hanging lamp or hand-crafted fixture where appropriate
    • No direct downlight on the worshipper

    Glare Control

Source must be concealed. The eye should see the deity glow, not the bulb. Recessed adjustable accents or honeycomb-shielded spots solve this.

    Common Mistakes

    • 4000K cool light in a ritual space
    • Bare bulbs visible from the worshipper position
    • Single bright downlight overhead
    • Mixing colours of cove and accent

    Professional Recommendation

Warm, focused, low ambient. The murti should be the brightest object in the room by a clear margin.

    Frequently Asked Questions

Can I use RGB or coloured lighting?+

For festive scenes, yes, on a separate circuit. For daily worship, stick to warm white at 2700K.

Where should the focal accent be mounted?+

Above and slightly in front of the deity, angled 30°–45° to avoid hard shadows.
