    Retail Lighting Design Guide

    Retail is About Contrast

Unlike offices, retail interiors need clear visual hierarchy. The merchandise must be the brightest thing in the room, usually 3–5× brighter than the surrounding ambient.

    Accent Ratios

    Store TypeAccent : Ambient Ratio
    Premium fashion5:1 – 10:1
    General apparel3:1 – 5:1
    Jewellery15:1 or higher on display
    Supermarket / value2:1

    CRI is Critical

Specify CRI 90+ (R9 > 50) for any store where fabric colour, skin tone or food matters. CRI 80 will visibly mute the merchandise.

    CCT by Category

    • Fashion: 3000K (warm, flattering)
    • Jewellery / diamonds: 3500K–4000K to bring out brilliance
    • Food & bakery: 2700K–3000K, high CRI
    • Tech / electronics: 4000K

    Beam Strategy

Track-mounted spots with replaceable lenses are the workhorse of retail. Plan for narrow beams (15°–24°) on featured pieces, medium beams (24°–40°) on general merchandise, and an ambient layer that does not compete with the accents.

    Common Mistakes

    • Uniform downlights and nothing else
    • Low CRI on garments
    • Ambient too bright to register accents
Retail without contrast looks like a warehouse. Retail with contrast looks like a brand.
