Bar Lighting Design
A bar is theatre, low ambient, strong back-bar accent, warm CCT and a working counter that staff can actually see.

Two Audiences, Two Strategies
A bar serves the guest (atmosphere) and the bartender (function) at the same time. Lighting must serve both, with separate circuits.
Lux and CCT
| Surface | Recommended |
|---|---|
| Ambient | 30–80 lux |
| Back-bar bottles | Accent at 5:1 to 10:1 ratio |
| Counter task (staff side) | 300 lux |
| Tables / booths | 50–100 lux |
| CCT | 2400K–2700K |
| CRI | 90+ |
Back-Bar Drama
Bottles are the visual feature. Backlight or grazing from above with warm narrow beams. The shelves themselves should glow.
Staff Task Lighting
Under-counter or recessed strip on the bartender side. Bright enough to pour accurately, concealed from the guest.
Common Mistakes
- Bar lit like a restaurant
- No back-bar lighting, bottles disappear
- Staff working in shadow
- Cool CCT, atmosphere collapses
Professional Recommendation
Low ambient, dramatic back-bar, hidden task. 2700K or warmer. Dim everything.

Frequently Asked Questions
How dark is too dark?+
Below 30 lux ambient becomes hard to read menus or move safely. Use accent and pathway light to compensate.
RGB on the back-bar, yes or no?+
In moderation, on a separate circuit, scenes-only. Always alongside warm white.
