Restaurant Lighting Design
How to light a restaurant so food, faces and the room itself perform. Table-led, low ambient, warm CCT and high CRI.

Light the Plate, Light the Face
A restaurant has two non-negotiable surfaces, the plate and the face across the table. Everything else supports.
Lux and CCT
| Surface | Recommended |
|---|---|
| Table top | 200–300 lux focused |
| Ambient | 50–150 lux |
| Bar / counter | 150–250 lux |
| Art / feature walls | 150–250 lux vertical |
| CCT | 2700K (fine dining), 3000K (casual) |
| CRI | 90+, R9 > 50 |
Scene Programme
- Lunch, ambient 60–80%, accents subtle
- Dinner, ambient 30–40%, accents up, table pendants warm
- Late, ambient 10–20%, accents and decorative carry the room
- Cleaning, full output
Glare Discipline
No bare LED, no sharp beams above table height into the diner's eye, no naked downlights. Use honeycomb, deep recess or wall-grazing.
Common Mistakes
- Bright cool downlights on diners' faces
- No scene control, lunch and dinner look identical
- Low CRI, food looks grey
- Decorative pendants doing all the work, table lit by chance
Professional Recommendation
Table-led design. 2700K, CRI 90+, dimmable scenes. Build the brand into the light, not just the brand of the light.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is the ideal CCT for fine dining?+
2700K, CRI 90+ with strong R9. Skin and food both benefit.
Should I use candles?+
Yes, where appropriate. Real flame adds intimacy that LEDs cannot replicate. Combine with low-output warm fixtures, not replace them.
