Why Architectural Lighting Needs a Dedicated Consultant, Not Just an Electrician
An electrician can execute a lighting system extremely well. But installation is not the same as deciding what the light should reveal, how it should perform or how the space should feel.

An electrician can install a lighting system beautifully.
But installation is not the same as lighting design.
The electrician is responsible for safe, reliable execution. The architect shapes the building. The interior designer develops the material and spatial language. The automation team builds the control system. The luminaire supplier provides products.
A lighting consultant connects all of these decisions through light.
That distinction matters because a project can have excellent electrical work, expensive fixtures and a sophisticated control system, yet still feel visually flat, glaring or difficult to use. The missing part is often not equipment. It is a coherent lighting decision.
This is not about replacing the electrician
A good lighting project depends on a skilled electrical contractor.
The electrician brings practical knowledge of wiring, containment, load, distribution, earthing, safety, access and installation. Site realities frequently require the electrician to solve problems that drawings cannot fully anticipate.
The lighting consultant should respect that expertise and work closely with the contractor.
The difference is responsibility.
The electrician should not have to decide whether the artwork needs a 10-degree or 24-degree beam, how bright the dining table should feel relative to the walls, which facade elements deserve emphasis or how a hotel lobby should transition from day to night.

Similarly, a lighting consultant should not pretend to replace the electrical engineer or contractor on matters outside the lighting-design scope.

Fixture selection is not lighting design
Many projects treat lighting design as the act of selecting downlights, pendants and profiles from a catalogue.
That is product selection.
Lighting design begins before the product.
It asks:
- What is the visual hierarchy?
- What activities happen in each space?
- Which surfaces should receive light?
- What should remain dark?
- How should people and materials appear?
- What are the required task levels?
- Where can the source be integrated or concealed?
- How will daylight change the scene?
- What happens at different times?
- How will the system be controlled, maintained and commissioned?
Only after those questions are answered can a luminaire be selected properly.
A product may be excellent and still be wrong for the application. The wattage may be excessive. The beam may be unsuitable. The cut-off may be poor. The fixture may not dim to the required level. The driver may not work with the control protocol. The source may be visible from normal positions.
Lighting quality comes from the relationship between product, placement, surface, user and control.
The reflected ceiling plan cannot hold the full design
A reflected ceiling plan is important, but it is only one view of the system.
People do not experience a space as dots on a ceiling. They experience illuminated walls, faces, objects, floors, art, joinery, landscape and changing brightness.

A consultant designs the light before choosing the fitting
Suppose a wall needs to be softly illuminated.
The decision is not simply "add wall washers."
The consultant considers:

- Surface colour and reflectance
- Texture and tolerance
- Ceiling height
- Available setback
- Desired uniformity
- Whether the beam edge should be visible
- Viewing direction
- Source concealment
- Spacing
- Wattage
- Dimming level

Only then is the optic and product chosen.
Without that sequence, the fixture is often placed according to ceiling convenience. The result may be scallops, dark gaps, excessive light at the top, spill onto the floor or direct glare.
Early involvement prevents expensive compromises
Lighting decisions are physically connected to architecture and interiors.
A recessed luminaire needs ceiling depth. A wall washer needs the correct setback. A concealed profile needs a cove or extrusion detail. A pendant needs structural support. A facade fixture needs mounting and wiring. An in-ground light needs drainage. A control system needs appropriate circuits and compatible drivers.
If the consultant joins after the ceiling, joinery and electrical drawings are frozen, the design has fewer options.
Late-stage changes may require:

- Moving sprinklers or services
- Adding visible surface fixtures
- Changing joinery
- Rewiring circuits
- Creating access panels
- Replacing already ordered products

The consultant's fee is usually small compared with the cost of correcting unresolved lighting after execution.
Calculations need interpretation
Lighting software can calculate illuminance, uniformity and other metrics. It cannot decide the complete experience on its own.
A calculation depends on:

- Correct mounting height
- Reliable photometric files
- Surface reflectance assumptions

- Actual furniture and partition conditions
- The correct workplane

A green result on a calculation grid does not guarantee good lighting.

The purpose of calculation is not to prove that a fixture layout is correct. It is to test and improve the layout.
Specifications protect quality
"12W LED downlight, 3000K" is not a meaningful lighting specification.
Many products can match those three descriptions while producing completely different results.

- Lumen output or intensity
- Colour temperature and tolerance
- Colour quality
- Glare-control features
- Driver type
- Dimming protocol and range
- Ingress and impact protection
- Mounting accessories
- Finish
- Photometric data
- Warranty and service requirements
- Approved equivalent criteria
This level of definition protects the design during procurement.
It does not mean that substitutions are impossible. It means an alternative should be evaluated for optical, electrical, physical and visual equivalence, not only for wattage and price.
Controls are part of design, not an automation add-on
A control vendor can build a powerful system, but the lighting consultant defines what the scenes need to achieve.
Which layers operate during Welcome? What changes during Dinner? Which exterior lights dim after 11:00 pm? What remains on during emergency or cleaning? Which circuits should respond to daylight or occupancy? How low should each luminaire dim?
Without a control intent, the automation system receives a list of circuits rather than an experience.
The consultant also checks whether the selected luminaires and drivers can actually deliver the scenes. Deep dimming, smooth transitions, low-end stability and colour consistency cannot be assumed.
Site aiming is where the drawing becomes light
Adjustable lighting is not finished when it is installed.
Spotlights need aiming. Wall washers need alignment. Landscape lights need adjustment around planting. Facade beams need to be balanced. Scene levels need to be tuned. Fixtures may need shields, lenses or position changes.
This work should happen after dark and after the major furniture, art and landscape elements are in place.
A site can contain all the correct products and still look wrong because the beams are not aimed. Commissioning is not a cosmetic extra. It is the final stage of design.

The consultant is responsible for coherence
A residence may have twenty types of luminaires. A hotel may have several hundred fixtures. A facade may use multiple optics. An office may combine daylight, general light, task light and controls.
The consultant's deeper job is to make these pieces behave as one system.
The light should remain consistent across colour, brightness, beam quality and control. The architecture, interiors, landscape and operations should not feel like separate lighting packages.
That coherence is difficult to buy from a catalogue because it comes from judgement across the whole project.
The final value is not the fixture
